After generations of silence, God speaks to Abram. His words are simple instructions to follow, with a cryptic promise attached to it. God asks him to leave behind his father’s house and all the things he ever knew and start walking. Then God promises to make Abram a great nation, a great name and a blessing and something about all families of earth being blessed through Abram.
“And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing; 3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.” Genesis 12:2,3
Seventy five year old Abram sets out with his barren wife, in response to a God, whose most recent acts included the flood and crazy confusion that came over all people at Babel. There was nothing Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic or even Time bound about what had been asked of him or promised to him. While nothing about this journey was SMART, it did in fact become the turning point in history and the grand scale of the promise is still rings true in our lives.
Galatians 3:7-9,14 says 7 Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham.8 Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you. 9 So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith…. 14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.
Listen up! When God promises something, He is faithful to manifest the promise in our lives. Never measure God’s promise with your limited scale but be bold in Christ as you walk into His mystery. God’s promises reveal His nature. When he promises light don’t ever assume it’s a candle. Be ready to expect that the promise of “light” is a promise to give Himself away to you because He is the light of the world. That’s the scale only He operates on. Don’t believe me? Check this out.
Genesis 17: 6 I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. 7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.
The covenant essentially promises “to be your God and of your descendants”. Every promise and blessing we have ever received flows from this moment when God pledged himself to Abraham and his seed. What does it mean to be a God to a people? It means God without reservation bound Himself to us, to love us, to protect us, to defend us, to give us His grace, guidance, help, justice and to be affected by us.
The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you (Genesis 12:1).” The covenant came full circle when Christ Jesus, the beloved Son of God, left Heaven, left the presence of THE FATHER and journeyed all the way to Golgotha.
When God sends you on a journey, He goes with you. You are part of this covenant. God has pledged himself to you. Have faith.
Yeah! He is the greatest Father ever!
